Then Abraham lifted his eyes and looked, and there behind him was a ram caught in a thicket by its horns. So Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it up for a burnt offering instead of his son. And Abraham called the name of the place, The-LORD-Will-Provide; as it is said to this day, “In the Mount of the LORD it shall be provided.”

Genesis 22:13-14

When Abraham was about to sacrifice his son and saw no way of escape, the Lord provided a lamb for the sacrifice and delivered Isaac. Abraham made the grand discovery that it was one of the characteristics of Jehovah to see and provide for the needs of His people. Therefore, he called Him Jehovah-Jireh: the Lord will see, or the Lord will provide.

A great many Christians today have never made Abraham’s discovery. They do not know that the Lord is Jehovah-Jireh. They are trusting Him to save their souls in the future, but they never dream He wants to carry their cares for them now.

They are like a man with a heavy load on his back who was given a lift by a friend. He thankfully climbed into the vehicle, but still kept his burden on his back, bowed down under the weight of it.

“Why do you not put your burden down on the bottom of the carriage?” asked his friend.

“Oh,” replied the man, “It’s a great deal to ask you to carry me, and I could not ask you to carry my burden also.”

You wonder how anyone could be so silly, and yet are you not doing the same? Are you trusting the Lord to take care of you, but still carrying your burdens on your own shoulders?

Revelation 2:7

O friends! Feed on the tree of life; feed on the measure of life, and the pure power which God has revealed and manifested in you. Do you know where your real food comes from? Do you remember the taste? Then keep to it, and do not meddle with the kind of food that seems desirable to the other eye, the one that promises to make you wise.

O abide in the simplicity that is in Christ Jesus, in the naked truth that you have felt there! It is there that you will be able to know and distinguish your food, which has several names in Scripture but is all one and the same thing: the bread, the milk, the water, the wine, the flesh and blood of him who came down from heaven.

It is all the same food, only it is given to us in different measures – sometimes weaker, sometimes stronger – according to the capacity we have for receiving it.

Rest in the Lord and wait patiently for Him . . .

Psalm 37:7

Henry Susa, the great German mystic, once heard a knock at his door. A strange woman stood there with a babe in her arms which she thrust into his arms, saying, “Here you have the fruit of your sin.”

Susa had never before seen the woman. He was as innocent as a dove. The news of what had happened went through the town like a flash. So this is the man we had revered as holy! What a hypocrite, what a fraud.

Suso was crushed. He groaned like a dying man. What was he to do? He withdrew to a desert place and called upon the Lord saying it was more than he could bear. “What shall I do, Lord?” he cried in his pain and shame. “Thou knowest that I am innocent.”

The answer came to him with perfect clearness and finality. “What shall you do? Do as I did; suffer for the sins of others and say nothing.” Suso saw the Cross. Peace came to his troubled soul. He returned to his home; took the child and sweetly, humbly cared for the waif and reared it as if it were his very own, never saying a word in self-defense.

Years later, the unknown woman returned to publish abroad Suso’s innocence, but the work was done. Suso had been conformed to the image of God’s Son. The victory was achieved. Here you have victory’s essence, its deepest nature: “Christ in you, the hope of glory.”

My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience.

James 1:2-3

A person whose ancestors for three or four generations have all been Christians, may inherit their virtues; but although affecting his life for good, they do not count before God as rightheousness, for they are not the fruit of the directly imparted divine life. A believer may thus inherit patience, and although he may be but a babe in Christ, he is seen to be more stable than a more advanced believer, because whatever goes wrong he stands unruffled.

To empty him, the Father puts him in circumstances where his natural “patience” fails. After repeated failures of his natural virtue of patience, he realizes that it is not enough to meet all trials, and carry him triumphantly through them all. Then he turns to the Father to give him His own unfailing patience.
